Uchiage Party

posted by Xone

Today, MSG, Misaki and Andrew had an "Uchiage Party" for our DMC Halloween costumes. *Uchiage Party means "wrap party."
We went to Rain Forest Cafe.
Our office is located near Fisherman’s Wharf. This is a touristy area in SF. Rain Forest Café is one of our favorite places.
Gayha: This is like Hawaii!
Diva: I feel like we are on vacation!
Gayha and Diva kindly offered to use their cash prize from their costume and pumpkin contest.
Gayha: Tropical drink!
*She poses with an MSG sign.
Tropical fish!
People stopped talking when looking at menus…. Serious business…
Look at this dessert. “Volcano Chocolate cake”!!
Thank you! Gayha and Diva! Let’s start making costumes for next year's Halloween!

What do you want for Christmas?
I know it is not even Thanksgiving yet, and here in San Francisco people who have not yet figured out the relationship between moist air and mold still have rank smelling jack-o'-lanterns on their steps. I was a little surprised my father is already doing his Christmas shopping. So when he asked me what I wanted I told him, "The new Dick Cheney biography." He replied, "Hell no! Maybe for your birthday but that man is nothing you want for Christmas."
That got me thinking, what manga would my father think is in the Christmas spirit? The question interests me because as hard as various socio-political forces have tried to secularize Christmas, it IS a religious holiday.
Sort of along that same train of thought, a lot of manga integrate Christian imagery. The name Golgo-13 is a corruption of the name of the hill Jesus was crucified on, a lot of manga vampires are scared of crosses, and so on. None of that feels Christmas-like in the way my father means. I know there have been at least two "Lives of Jesus" manga and a few bible manga. I’ve not read them. Are they any good?
Of course, failing any good manga about Jesus, is there a great manga about Santa Claus? My dad would love that, and I can kind of see it as a shonen title, what with all the travel it must have taken to find eight reindeer that can fly, and make that group of misfits a real team.
So I ask you the fans: What’s a good Christmas manga?

Real vol. 2
As a wheelchair user myself I noticed something in Real volume 2 that I more than likely should have noticed in volume 1. Inoue Takehiko may be the only cartoonist who has ever drawn a wheelchair as they exist after, say, 1988. Most cartoonists draw something from around 1976 – vinyl seats, wheels placed straight on their axels with no slant for greater speed, made from aluminum. Heavy, heavy, heavy. You would not play basketball in one but they did smell like basketballs (and sweat).
If you look at a modern sports wheelchair it looks much like what Towaga uses in Real – ultra-light alloys with inward slanting wheels for speed. Of course you can't tell in a comic but they don’t smell like anything anymore.
All this wheelchair geekism is but a small reason to buy Real, which is a pretty rockin’ manga.
Note: I had really cool pictures of wheelchairs but there were copyright problems. As a VIZ employee I have taken a blood oath that nothing is more sacred than copyright law but as a blogger I wonder who really cares about two random pictures of wheelchairs that didn’t even have credits?
